Encouraged by the success of the previous joint conferences organized by the Chinese Society of Chemical Science and Technology (UK), and the Society of Chemical Industry, the 17th CSCST-SCI conference will be held in the University of Oxford on Oct 9, 2010, with the theme Chemical Science & Technology towards a Low-Carbon Economy.
The world is facing a carbon-constrains, with profound impact on the conventional ways of industrial production and business operation, even the future of our planet. Despite the controversial failure of the 2009 Copenhagen Climate Summit, no one can deny the fact that low-carbon economy is moving quickly upwards the agenda of governments of many nations. China has proposed an ambitious carbon-cutting blueprint. The newly-formed British coalition government has proclaimed to ’use a wide range of levers to cut carbon emissions, decarbonise the economy and support the creation of new green jobs and technologies’. Intending to tackle the carbon stress and sustain the mankind future, many governments shift their funding focus on relevant R&D areas, which are highly expected to breed innovations on science & technology, and opportunities for new business revenue. Although extensive solutions to a low-carbon economy have been proposed, tremendous challenges remain in reality and require multi-disciplinary research and development efforts from chemistry, materials, biology, environment science, and engineering. Commercialization of low-carbon technology is also important to fuel future research.
The aim of this conference is to discuss advances in low carbon technologies and to promote technology transfer from laboratory research to practical application. CSCST-SCI2010 will provide a forum for academics, practitioners and young researchers working in relevant areas including alternative energy, functional materials, non-conventional processing, resources and environment, and sustainability, to discuss new developments, concepts and practices, and to identify future research needs, to initiate of collaborations as well. CSCST-SCI2010 will feature plenary and invited talks by experts in low-carbon, biotechnology, energy and environment, and presentations by research students and postdocs. Full contributed papers will be peer reviewed and published in a special issue of Particuology, or recommended to focus sections on Journal of Environmental Sciences and Journal of Chemical Technology and Biotechnology, depending on the topics and the authors’ publication intention.
