Introduction
AkzoNobel is the largest global decorative paints and industrial coatings company and a major producer of specialty chemicals. Our portfolio includes well known brands such as Dulux, Sikkens, International and Eka. We are a Global Fortune 500 company and are consistently ranked as one of the leaders on the Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes. With operations in more than 80 countries, our 55,000 people around the world are committed to excellence and delivering Tomorrow’s Answers Today.
To support the strong and rapid growth of our businesses in China, we opened a new research laboratory in Songjiang, near to Shanghai in late 2007. This laboratory undertakes applied research in support of new product development for both AkzoNobel’s China and regional businesses, as well as for the AkzoNobel Group globally. We are now seeking to expand our highly skilled and motivated workforce in the laboratory.
Opportunities
There are a number of opportunities available for post-graduate scientists as well as experienced industrial researchers with excellent qualifications and expertise in the Chemical or Materials Sciences to apply for positions as Senior Scientists in the Expert Capability Groups based in the laboratory. Successful applicants will lead research project teams and be responsible for the delivery of projects.
Applications by candidates with expertise in polymer chemistry; colloid & polymer science; surface & interfacial science of coatings & films; materials science; analytical & measurement science; and process technology would be particularly welcome.
Successful candidates will be employed from early-2012 onwards. In some case, candidates can expect to be seconded to one of AkzoNobel’s global laboratories in Europe or the USA to undertake initial training for a period of 1 or 2 years.
Required Skills and Experience
To be considered for these roles, you must have a Masters degree or PhD in Chemical or Physical Sciences, Materials Science or Engineering. Post-doctoral or industrial experience would be an advantage, but is not essential. You should have at least five years research experience in a university, research institution or industry.
As befits a group specializing in the physical sciences, candidates should be highly numerate and comfortable with complex theoretical and analytical methods in their area of expertise – for example, being capable of understanding (and extending) current state-of-the-art theory. All candidates should be experimentalists and the ability to write programs and modify or custom-build experimental apparatus is desirable.
We are looking for enthusiastic researchers with excellent interpersonal skills as there will be considerable cross-functional collaboration and communication with internal and external customers. You should also have proven project management and leadership skills.
The working language of our laboratory is English so you must have competence in the English language to at least level CET-6 (or IELTS/ToEFL equivalents).
